Sky signs to show new Formula 1 rival
Published Monday, Aug 23 2004, 21:01 BST | By Iain Chapman
Sky Sports have signed up to show the new A1 Grand Prix, which is set to rival the Bernie Ecclestone run Formula One.
The new racing series is the idea of, and backed by, Sheikh Maktoum Hasher Maktoum al-Maktoum, who is a member of the Dubai Royal Family. Sky have the rights to show A1 for 3 years, following the launch in the autumn of 2005.
A1 Grand Prix will differ from Formula One with all drivers driving the same specification car. The cars are being built by Lola, a firm based in Huntingdon. Organisers say that this will ensure that the competition will be based purely on the skills of the driver - rather than the funding available to the team. Drivers, of which there will be up to 20, will be driving for national teams.
Vic Wakeling, the managing director of Sky Sports, said: "We have been sold on the concept of a genuine test of driving skills and it has the added attraction of providing us with more international sport throughout the winter months."
