Details emerged today about the upcoming sixth season of Monarch of the Glen.

In a press release, the BBC says that this season will have a fresher feel, and the programme will be "faster and funnier than ever before."

Producer Rob Bullock said:

"This year we are bringing in new characters and ideas and that gives the show an exciting new boost of energy.

"That said, we are still focusing on the strengths that make Monarch the huge success it is - strong stories, tantalizing romance and that streak of anarchic comedy that runs through everything."

Details on upcoming plot developments were also announced today.

"The focus of this season is very much on Paul [(Lloyd Owen)] who takes on the mantle of being the laird," explained executive producer Gaynor Holmes. "He's an active, dynamic and exciting laird and because you feel like he is one of us, it's okay for him to make mistakes."

Lexie (Dawn Steele) will return from New Zealand. Other characters featured in this season include Isobel Anderson (Simone Lahbib) and Donald MacDonald (Tom Baker), alongside series regulars including Golly (Alexander Morton) and Molly (Susan Hampshire).

"I think Glenbogle has always had that feel of a place that people can go and change in," said Gaynor Holmes. "Glenbogle makes people see the good in life and reinterpret their own circumstances for the better.

"It's a place to escape to and that's the magic of Monarch Of The Glen - it just draws you in."
