BBC consider protest to Iraqi Government

Published Friday, Aug 27 2004, 22:51 BST | By Iain Chapman
A BBC team based in the Iraqi city of Najaf have been forced out of their hotel at gunpoint by local police. The action was triggered following reports by the al-Arabiya news channel that Grand Ayatollah Al-Sistani was to stage a demonstration in Najaf.

Over 60 journalists where involved from several media organisations, including the BBC's Alaistair Letihead and Kylie Morris, all of which were staying at the Najaf Sea Hotel.

Eyewitnesses say that the police officers screamed abuse at the journalists and fired shots. Some of the local police officers are also reported to have been masked.

Following the incident the BBC is considering making formal protests to the Iraqi Government. A spokesperson for the BBC said: "We don't regard it as appropriate behaviour and are considering a joint protest."
