Strong start for Parky on ITV
Published Monday, Sep 6 2004, 12:51 BST | By Neil Wilkes
A peak of over 6 million viewers tuned in for Michael Parkinson's debut on ITV Saturday, according to early figures.
Parkinson - which went out over 75 minutes from 9.45pm - averaged an impressive 5.7 million viewers (a 28.1% audience share), around 1.2 million more than he typically drew on BBC One.
The audience started off at just 3.6 million but rose steadily throughout, peaking at 6.2 million (33.2%).
Plenty of advance publicity coupled with Tom Cruise's appearance will no doubt account in part for the show's early success; its first real test will come next week as the show settles in to its regular slot.
