ITV won the ratings battle on Wednesday night, with the terrestrial premiere of The Lost World: Jurassic Park pulling in a healthy share.
An average of 8.5 million viewers watched the blockbuster from 20.00 - 22.30. It was preceded by a double-bill of soaps Emmerdale and Coronation Street, which were seen by 10.7 million and 13.9 million respectively.
However, it was a good night for BBC News, as viewers flocked to find out the latest on the US Elections. The 6pm Early Evening News averaged 7 million (33%), whilst the BBC Ten O'Clock News attracted 5.6 million. BBC2's NewsNight doubled its audience to 1.4 million at 23.30.
ITV's Nightly News, meanwhile, managed just 2.5 million.
Earlier in the evening, The Weakest Link shone through yet again. 4.3 million tuned in at 17.15, giving BBC2 a share of 26% - the highest share of any UK channel at that time.
