A new network of local television stations is to be created, following the ITC's decision to award 36 restricted service licences to VFG.

VFG, a video and film facilities company, has set up the Local Broadcasting Company (LBC) to launch and maintain the new channels, according to Media Guardian.

The RSLs acquired by LGB include the 22 licences held by Herts TV in the home counties, East Anglia and Scotland; City Television's seven RSL franchises in the south-west; Glasgow's Own Television Channel, On Ayr Television and Channel 6 Television's Edinburgh and Aberdeen licences. LBG has also secured options to acquire RSLs for York, Firth of Clyde and Inverness.

The combined potential audience of the channels amounts to 4 million.

David Stamp, VFG CEO, said: : "The Independent Television Commission's own research shows that local information is the top need for viewers. This is exactly what we will be providing. We will carry everything from bus timetables to who won the award for biggest marrow at the local fete."
