Britton will leave the ITV1 daytime show in July and presenters including Fiona Phillips, Coleen Nolan, Holly Willoughby and Christine Bleakley are rumoured to be in the running for the post.
However, the Duchess of York, 49, apparently put in a request that she be considered to take over during a recent meeting with the broadcaster.
"The Duchess came in to see the team and later that evening she called back to ask if she could be kept in mind for Fern's replacement," a source told The Sun.
"She is a big fan of the show and is keen to carry on her TV work. She loves interviewing. As a mum, she is empathetic. The producers think she could actually be a good contender."
A This Morning spokesperson commented: "We are talking to a number of people at the moment, but will not be confirming who will be taking over from Fern until later in the year."
