ITV to make Mike Bassett series

By
ITV today announced it is to produce a new TV series based on the feature film Mike Bassett: England Manager. Both Ricky Tomlinson and Amanda Redman are in negotiations to reprise the roles they played in the 2001 film.

In the new show, Bassett will be seen during an agonising football season as the manager of lowly third division club Wirral County following his spell as England Manager.

The new series will be made by Artist Independent Television Ltd with Smiling Films and written by the same team who wrote the feature film, Rob Sprackling and John Smith. Additional epsiodes will by co-written by Mike Burton and Peter Sinclair.

Controller of Comedy for ITV, Sioned Wiliam said: "Mike Bassett was a huge hit in cinemas and we are thrilled to be bringing these great characters back in this new incarnation. It's wonderful to be working with such great actors and such talented writers."

Producer Luc Roeg said: "We are all thrilled to be working with ITV on the series and delighted that Mike Bassett has been given the chance to take care of some unfinished business!"

Sprackling and Smith said: "We can't wait to bring Bassett to the small screen. His hapless antics at the bum end of the football league are the perfect antidote to the super cool glamour of the Premiership."

The series will be screened next year.
