Sky News Jackson coverage peaks with 761,000

Sky News was the preferred news channel of choice for coverage of Michael Jackson's sudden death last night.

According to early ratings figures, the Sky News audience peaked with 761,000 viewers - a 7.8% share - at 11.30pm last night, around ten minutes after Jackson's death was confirmed.

At 11pm the audience had doubled from 203k (1.6%) to 401k (3.3%) in minutes as news of Jackson's condition began to spread.

After the peak, Sky News kept an audience of more than half a million for the following hour.

BBC News experienced a similar spike in the ratings but peaked lower, with 606k (8.9%) at 11.55pm.

US station Fox News, which is broadcast in the UK through Sky, reached a peak audience of 85k (1.3%) at 11.55pm.
