Des O'Connor reveals 'Blind Date' snub

WENN

Des O'Connor has revealed that he missed out on the chance to host '80s show Blind Date after attempting to pitch the programme to Thames TV.

The 77-year-old entertainer said that he suggested the show to the broadcaster's head Philip Jones after watching Australian version Perfect Match.

"Philip was worried that the girls might have trouble with the men," O'Connor told DS. "'What if they get too frisky?' He then agreed it was a good TV idea and suggested, 'Maybe we could send them to Fortnum and Mason for tea?'

"I remember saying to him, 'What do I ask them, 'How many doughnuts did you have?'"

He continued: "A few months later, Cilla Black was fronting Blind Date for LWT! It didn't do too badly, did it!

"Philip Jones was a wonderful man, but I doubt if I will ever forgive him for turning down Blind Date!"

Des O'Connor Volume 1 DVD is available now.
