BBC wins New Years' Eve ratings battle

The BBC was the most-watched network as the clock struck 12 on New Years' Eve, according to early figures.

The National Lottery New Year Stars pulled in 7 million viewers and a 47% share, easily beating ITV's repeat of The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber, which averaged just 3.5 million.

BBC2's Jools at the New Year Hootenanny was seen by 1.5 million (11%). Channel 5 marginally beat Channel 4, as Night Fever averaged 1.1 million, compared with the latter's 1 million for The History of the Pop Video.

Earlier in the evening, ITV's Stars and their Lives took 9.3 million, Coronation Street averaged 11.8 million, and Inspector Morse managed 5.5 million.

On BBC1, David Copperfield averaged 4.3 million and 4.8 million for its two halves, whilst EastEnders was seen by 9.1 million. Goodbye 2000 averaged 6.6 million (42%).

Overall, ITV won peaktime, with a 35.2% share, whilst BBC1 managed 27.3%.
