BSkyB to launch Scottish football PPV
Published Wednesday, Jan 3 2001, 09:51 GMT | By Neil Wilkes
Four games from the Scottish Premier League will be broadcast by BSkyB on a Pay-Per-View basis, it was announced this week.
Three of the games will be broadcast at 12.55 on a Saturday, with the remaining at 8pm on a Wednesday. The first will be St Johnstone vs Celtic on 31st January, which can be viewed at a cost of £7.95.
Should the matches prove successful, the SPL and BSkyB could sign a long-term agreement in March for a full set of PPV matches.
Roger Mitchell, SPL CEO, said, " Pay-per-view should be about extra choice. Indeed, these live broadcasts will be in addition to existing televised matches on terrestrial and satellite channels and will not affect, for example, the 30 live SPL games Sky Sports will show this season."
Vik Wakeling, Director of Sky Sports, said, "There’s a widespread acknowledgement that the standard of football in the SPL is higher than it’s been for years."
Martin Rose, secretary of the Scottish Federation of Football Supporters Clubs, said, "My concern is for the paying customers who want to go to football at the same time every week."
