TV steeplejack Fred Dibnah has died of cancer at the age of 66, his family confirmed today.
The Bolton-born presenter had been battling cancer of the bladder for three years. He was taken ill in September while filming his latest BBC series Made In Britain then cancelled all his remaining engagements. He died early Saturday surrounded by friends and family at Bolton Hospice.
Dibnah's best friend Alf Molyneaux told BBC News: "I haven't seen him for a couple of weeks, it's been family only at the hospice for some time, but I was told by his son earlier today (Saturday) that he passed away peacefully surrounded by his family.
"His enthusiasm was infectious; he told me about his steam engines and the mine in his back garden and I asked if I could take a look. He was more than happy to show me and I was soon bitten by the bug."
His final series will be broadcast in Spring 2005.
