The media mogul, who previously produced Idol, told Access Hollywood that he is eager to land Abdul following news that she will not be returning to the Fox reality programme.
"I'll ask her to come on the show... possibly as a performer and as a dancer," he claimed.
Discussing her exit from Idol, he said: "I'm sad. It's sort of an end of an era for me. Obviously money had something to do with it."
However, he added: "I think there’s always a chance that we’ll get her back on Idol."
This is not the first time that Abdul has been linked to So You Think You Can Dance. Last month, Lythgoe admitted that he would "certainly consider" employing her if she chose to leave Idol.
