The Sony executive has worked alongside big artists including Rogue Traders, Jessica Mauboy and Karnivool, and now replaces Kyle Sandilands on the reality show.
Programmer David Mott said: "We had no idea we would be looking for a new judge this year, luckily for us the best qualified person for the job was right in front of us. Jay Dee brings to Idol a wealth of experience in nurturing talent and helping them achieve international chart success."
Springbett revealed that he is looking forward to his post.
He said: "No-one’s more shocked than I am of getting the call. But I’m looking forward to working with the judges, getting in there working with the contestants. I work with talent everyday. It’s an extension of that for me."
