The Hairspray director has been a guest panellist on the popular US dancing competition since its third season, TV Guide reports.
"We're going to have a third resident judge now. Adam Shankman is going to come and join us," Nigel Lythgoe said.
In June, the 44-year-old reportedly began a Twitter campaign to secure the spot and will now join Lythgoe and Mary Murphy on the series on a regular basis.
Meanwhile, former American Idol star Paula Abdul was offered a role on the show by the media mogul last month.
Lythgoe said that he is still hopeful about retaining her services, adding: "We'll have an empty chair and that empty chair can be filled, I hope one day by Paula Abdul and by lots of other people."
Shankman recently admitted that he has considered doing a sequel to his 2007 dance movie in 3D.
