The BBC has triumphed over ITV in the battle of the news bulletins, just two days after suffering a heavy defeat.

ITV's News At Ten, delayed by half an hour to 22.30, drew 4.5 million and a 28% share. The BBC Ten O'Clock News, drew in 5.6 million and a 27% share with coverage of Peter Mandelson's resignation.

ITV's last-minute decision came after scheduling a 90-minute episode of drama The Vice at 21.00. It averaged 7.2 million (33%).

Preceding the bulletin on BBC1 was Crimewatch UK, averaging 6.5 million (29%).

An ITV spokesman said that "because their bulletin was first on, the BBC benefited from the extremely busy news day".
