Coronation Street actress Suranne Jones, who plays Karen MacDonald, has signed a £750,000 contract with Granada to take part in new drama projects.
Granada, anxious to keep the actress with the network after her departure from Corrie, have promised to turn her into the next Sarah Lancashire. They are now considering her as a potential lead for eight different drama projects, reports the News of the World.
A network insider said: "Suranne was brilliant as Karen McDonald. We were devastated when she wanted to leave Coronation Street.
"But she wants to stay with ITV so we've been working on projects that will suit her."
She will begin work on her first drama in January.
