More reality TV than ever in 2005

TV viewers can expect more reality shows than ever next year, with 176 ideas being planned for 2005.

Although many of the ideas will never reach our screens, the figures are likely to be criticised by many TV critics, who already think that there are too many reality shows.

ITV's plans include Vote For Me, which sees viewers voting for who should contest a seat at the general election, and Stars On Thin Ice, which is being described as an ice-rink version of the BBC's Strictly Come Dancing.

Five is planning Extreme Health Farm, where celebrities including Rebecca Loos visit different countries and try out strange new therapies, as well as So You Think You Can Teach, where celebrities take to the classroom.

Meanwhile, Sky One may show a programme which sees mothers and daughters competing against each other on the dating scene.

Don Foster, the culture spokesman for the Liberal Democrats, has been the first to speak out, complaining that we could, "have wall-to-wall reality TV by next Christmas".
