The EastEnders actor, who plays father Mick Shipman in the original UK sitcom, argued that the show's basic love story made it easily transferable overseas.
"It's a love story - that's all it is, at the end of the day it's a love story," he told Teletext. "It wasn't written as a comedy, it was written as a comedic drama about two young people who fall in love and all the ramifications of that.
"So yeah I'm quite sure it will [do well in America], I don't see any great problem with that at all."
However, he warned the producers that the setting of the show would be the key to its fortunes.
"They've got to make sure they set it right - I mean what is it that makes the audience laugh at Billericay and what is that makes them laugh about Wales. It's that clash of two different, essentially similar cultures, and I'm sure they can match that up in America, no problem at all."
Earlier this month, it was revealed that ABC was developing a remake of the comedy. Writers James Corden and Ruth Jones are reportedly not working on the project.
