The 43-year-old actor will be seen in another one-off episode of the mystery show next Easter, rather than over Christmas as producers had hoped.
"This year we went out on New Year's Day and we were the highest-rated show. We even beat EastEnders," Davies is quoted by the Daily Express as saying. "We thought, 'Great, we'll have that again'.
"But we were told, 'No, we can't have New Year's Day, it has to go out in the next tax year because we have spent all the money for this year'."
He added: "There is a Jonathan Creek special coming. It's really good so be patient. It will be out - in about half a year's time!"
Davies has previously announced that he accepted a 25% pay cut to star in the project.
