Don Lane has died from a dementia-related illness, aged 75.

The Australian TV star, who won many awards for The Late Show and the Don Lane Show in the 1970s and '80s, passed away yesterday morning in a care facility.

Lane's manager Jayne Ambrose said in a statement: "His son is devastated and Australia has suffered a great loss today. It's a very sad day for the family."

Lane's co-host and friend Bert Newton said: "All I can say is that I can't think of anyone who I liked more in the industry, anyone I enjoyed working with, more than Don Lane."

Biographer Janise Beaumont, who wrote the story of Lane's life three years ago, added: "Up to the end he was very tactile... he loved hugs, he still could make eye contact, still be funny, still be charismatic... I love him very much. I preferred the world with him in it."

It is believed that a public memorial is being arranged.
