Jeremy Clarkson has joked that a silent episode of Top Gear should go ahead to stop the show offending people.

The 49-year-old suggested that an instalment in which he and fellow hosts James May and Richard Hammond keep quiet would be a perfect way to avoid complaints, the Daily Star reports.

Clarkson quipped: "One day we'll do an episode of Top Gear in which none of us speak. It's the only way they will have nothing to complain about.

"I don't think I've done anything naughty this year, though, have I?"

Last year, the broadcaster sparked outrage by making an on-screen remark about lorry drivers murdering prostitutes.

He has also been criticised for describing a car as "a bit gay" and joking about Hammond's high-speed car crash in previous episodes of the BBC motoring show.
