Lynda La Plante has said that there is too much reality television in the UK.

The author and Prime Suspect creator compared the effect of the genre to the use of real-life autopsy pictures in the upcoming ITV1 adaptation of her novel The Red Dahlia.

La Plante told Metro: "I find it equally disturbing to see a D-list celebrity in the jungle p*ssing and vomiting and eating rats, so excuse me for living.

"Chris Tarrant did a show years ago about Japanese game shows, we all laughed at it, but now we have it here every night of the week."

She added: "It's cheap, tawdry and creates a terrible void. The American crime shows dominate the schedules and they are excellent shows.

"Then you look at what we've got and we've fallen behind in every single category."

La Plante recently suggested that the BBC drama department may be afraid of her independence and claimed that the broadcaster would give her more attention if she were a "little Muslim boy".
