Series three of the E4 teen drama saw Prescott's character Emily embark on a gay romance with school friend Naomi and was widely praised by viewers.
Speaking to Diva magazine, Prescott said of gay attitudes: "I think teenagers now are very accepting of gays and lesbians.
"When you hear someone say something homophobic it really ages them. It sounds old-fashioned."
She added that the audience reaction has been "really cool" and that fans often tell her the storyline has inspired them to come out to friends and family.
Skins returns to E4 for its fourth series later this month.
