Blur bassist Alex James has become the first contestant voted off ITV1 reality show Popstar To Operastar.

The 'Song 2' star was voted into the bottom two by the public alongside Saturdays member Vanessa White.

Judges Katherine Jenkins and Rolando Villazon saved White, claiming that she had a greater "vocal capability" than the Blur rocker. However, fellow judges Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen and Meat Loaf preferred James's performance.

With the judges' decision tied, the final result was referred back to the public vote and host Alan Titchmarsh revealed that White had received more votes earlier in the night.

Speaking afterwards, James said: "It was great, what a blast... I enjoyed every minute of it."

Popstar To Operastar continues next Friday at 9pm on ITV.
