Campbell, who found fame on Popstars and Pop Idol, explained the vocal difficulties that he was having during an interview on This Morning.
"The whole process has been really cathartic and really extraordinary," the Scottish singer told hosts Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby.
"After 15 years of being a pop singer and writing songs on a guitar, flipping up into to falsetto - you can not do that in opera. Then doing West End theatre like Guys and Dolls, Chicago and Gone With The Wind, which uses a totally different aspect to the voice.
"You take those two different types of training and you have to unlearn them. It's the toughest thing I have ever had to do."
When Willoughby said that Campbell looked calm on stage, he joked: "If you only knew the inner turmoil that was going on!"
Campbell, Danny Jones, Marcella Detroit, Kym Marsh and Bernie Nolan are the remaining popstars in the ITV1 show, which airs on Fridays at 9pm.
