Prince Charles: BBC's Witchell "so awful"
Published Friday, Apr 1 2005, 02:34 BST | By James Welsh
Prince Charles was overheard making negative comments about Nicholas Witchell, the BBC's royal correspondent.
Witchell asked the Prince of Wales at a media appearance in Monbiel whether he was looking forward to his upcoming wedding to Camilla Parker Bowles. Prince Charles answered sarcastically that he was "very glad you have heard of it anyway." He then mumbled to his sons:
"These bloody people. I can't bear that man. I mean, he's so awful, he really is."
A spokesperson for the BBC rushed to the defence of Witchell, saying that the correspondent "is one of our finest," adding that Witchell's "question was perfectly reasonable under the circumstances."
