The actor, who plays DS Hathaway, the sidekick of DI Robbie Lewis (Kevin Whately), praised the quality of the stories and guest stars.
He told TV Times: "This is the best year in terms of quality of stories and guest stars."
However, the star did criticise the show's writers for creating too many back stories for his alter ego, having previously insisted that Hathaway should remain "an enigma".
Fox added: "I find it irritating that they give lots of back-story. It's better when you don't know. It's like with gratuitous horror films - it's the bit before the guy jumps out through the door and hacks you to death that's compelling."
