According to the News of the World, the Life Stories presenter will earn £40,000 for the programme.
Message of Hope will be a 60-minute documentary on ITV1 celebrating 20 years since the former South African leader, who is now 91, was freed from jail.
"It is an enormous coup. Yes, Piers is earning a lot of money for what most would see as an honour, but he is the best man for the job," an insider claimed.
The 45-year-old, who also judges on Britain's Got Talent, conducted a special interview with Cliff Richard last summer.
