The song, which was written for the show in 1970 by Barry Stoller, beat off competition from a number of other tracks.
The Daily Record reports that the theme tune for EastEnders came in second place, followed by shows including Doctor Who, Coronation Street, Countdown, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire and Emmerdale.
Match Of The Day host Gary Lineker said: "The theme tune never fails to excite me, even after all these years. It seems to be timeless."
The Performing Rights Society polled 2000 people during the study.
