PA reports that the actor will play a Cockney ex-docker called Don in Come Rain Come Shine.
The programme follows Don and his wife Dora (Alison Steadman), who are struggling with their finances.
Shaun Evans, who has previously appeared in Teachers and The Take, will star as Don's son David, a property developer.
The show's writer Jeff Pope said: "For obvious reasons, Sir David has been nervous of playing Cockney characters, but I think he felt the chance to say something about the kind of reckless reliance on credit that has almost brought us to our knees was too good to miss."
Filming for the two-hour drama is expected to begin next month.
