Sir David Jason has reportedly distanced his new programme The Show Must Go On from other "judgemental" televised talent shows.

The Five documentary follows an amateur dramatic group as they prepare to put on a West End play under Sir David's watchful eye. However, speaking at its launch, the Only Fools And Horses star claimed shows such as The X Factor invoke cruelty in their audiences.

According to The PA, he said: "It's a bit voyeuristic isn't it? You are watching people expose themselves and the audience seems to want to see the tears and the failures and how much it means to everybody, and if you ever watch any of those shows they're always saying, 'It's what I've always wanted, it's my life, I've always dreamt of this', and you think, 'Yeah well alright, then why didn't you do something about it before?'

"The object of our programme was never to be judgemental in that way," said Sir David of the documentary, which will be screened by Five on June 7.
