Homer Simpson has won a poll listing the greatest film and TV characters of the past 20 years, beating boy wizard Harry Potter into second place.

The poll, conducted by Entertainment Weekly also saw the cartoon character fend off competition from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, played by Sarah Michelle Gellar, and gangster Tony Soprano from US drama The Sopranos, who placed third and fourth respectively.

The Simpsons creator Matt Groening suggested that viewers "can relate to Homer because we're all secretly propelled by desires we can't admit to".

He added: "Homer is launching himself head-first into every single impulsive thought that occurs to him."

Other characters joining Homer in the top ten include Johnny Depp's Edward Scissorhands, Anthony Hopkin's Hannibal Lecter and fellow cartoon character Spongebob Squarepants.
