The actress, who won a BAFTA last night for her role in Mo, agreed that more funding should be available for scripted programming.
According to The Mirror, she explained: "Important drama touches people. I'm not saying it changes the world but seeds are planted."
She added: "It's really important, and yes, the money should be made available."
Walters, who also picked up a BAFTA nomination for A Short Stay in Switzerland, admitted that she had been anxious about her acceptance speech.
"[I was worried] that I would go up and thank the BBC instead of Channel 4," she said. "But it was odd because both of them meant a huge amount to me... wonderful scripts and very special somehow."
