NBC announces Katrina telethon

NBC has confirmed plans for a telethon to raise much-needed money for relief organisations trying to alleviate the suffering of the thousands upon thousands of people affected by the catastrophic Hurricane Katrina.

A Concert for Hurricane Relief will air on NBC, MSNBC and CNBC this Friday, September 2 at 8pm ET.

During the hour-long music-driven telethon, viewers will be urged to donate to the American Red Cross either online or by calling 1-800-HELP-NOW.

In a press release today, the network said:

"The humanitarian needs from this catastrophic hurricane are immense and will continue to emerge over the next weeks, months and even years. The American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund enables the Red Cross to provide shelter, food, counselling, and other assistance to those in need for this disaster and other disasters across the country each year.

"As the full extent of Hurricane Katrina's devastation is revealed, the task ahead challenges the capacity of any one organisation to respond. To meet the needs of the thousands of Americans facing loss, the American Red Cross will work shoulder-to-shoulder with its partners in the federal government and the non-profit community to provide essential support."

The telethon will be hosted by Today's Matt Lauer from NBC's 30 Rockefeller Plaza facility in New York City.
