US nets break in for Katrina reports
Published Thursday, Sep 1 2005, 20:18 BST | By James Welsh
The US broadcast networks broke in to regular programming with special reports as the situation across the American south - but primarily in New Orleans - continued to deteriorate on Thursday.
In addition to non-stop coverage on cable, the broadcast nets started to increase the amount of airtime dedicated to the situation on Wednesday after an initially slow response to the catastrophe. Some local stations have been relaying coverage from TV stations in the affected areas on their digital multicast services.
On Thursday, reports came in of dead bodies laying out on the flooded streets of New Orleans, and widespread lawlessness was also indicated. Those factors complicate the ongoing search, rescue and relief operations currently being undertaken. A complete evacuation operation is now in effect for New Orleans.
