Shatner to make 'Emmy Idol' performance

Celebrities will turn their hand to singing during the upcoming Emmy Awards ceremony.

'Emmy Idol' will pit TV personalities against one another, each singing a theme from a TV show. Viewers will be invited to vote for their favourite via text message or on CBS.com during the telecast on Sunday, September 18.

Emmy executive producer Ken Ehrlich explained: "There are certain television theme songs that are nearly as memorable as the shows connected to them. By jogging memories as well as creating wonderful moments by having them performed on this year's Emmy show, we think we're giving viewers one more reason to tune in and be entertained."

Kristen Bell (Veronica Mars) will entertain viewers with her rendition of the theme from Fame, Megan Mullally (Will & Grace) will perform the Green Acres theme along with Donald Trump, and Macy Gray will team up with CSI's Gary Dourdan for their interpretation of 'Movin' On Up', the theme from The Jeffersons.

Finally, William Shatner will inflict upon the audience the theme from Star Trek, complete with lyrics by Gene Roddenberry, along with opera singer Frederica von Stade.
