Sky1 has revealed the cast for its forthcoming Martina Cole adaptation The Runaway.

The new drama, based on Cole's 1997 novel, will follow young runaway Cathy Connor as she is adopted by an outrageous transvestite and reunited with her childhood sweetheart in '60s Soho.

Actor Alan Cumming will take his first British television role in 15 years as the cross-dressing Desrae, and Joanna Vanderham will make her professional acting debut as
Cathy.

Former Skins star Jack O'Connell will play Cathy's love interest Eamonn, while Ken Stott and ex-Robin Hood actor Keith Allen will also appear.

Executive producer Elaine Pyke commented: "Following the success of Martina Cole's The Take, we're thrilled to now be bringing The Runaway to life.

"Gritty, unflinchingly realistic and shocking but with outrageous musical numbers, a tender love story and an incredible cast, The Runaway has all the ingredients for a fantastic portrayal of one of Martina Cole's bestselling books."

Filming for the show is currently under way in South Africa. Six hour-long episodes are scheduled for transmission in 2011.
