The first female to take the title, O'Neil, of Calgary, Alberta, beat out 19-year-old Rex Goudie in the show's closest finale to date. A record 3.65 million votes were cast and an estimated 2.7 million Canadians tuned in for the announcement.
"I'm so incredibly thankful to be here," she told Canada AM afterwards. "Canadians have the biggest hearts. Rex and I could just feel everyone being so excited for us."
O'Neil's first single, 'Alive', goes on sale next month.
