Ronnie Barker / BBC

Comedy legend Ronnie Barker has died at the age of 76 following a long period of heart trouble.

Best known as half of The Two Ronnies along with Ronnie Corbett, he also starred in the immensely popular BBC sitcoms Porridge and Open All Hours. Additionally, he appeared in a number of dramatic roles, the last of which was in TV movie The Gathering Storm, playing Winston Churchill's manservant.

Last year Ronnie was awarded a lifetime achievement Bafta for his contribution to TV, both as an actor and a writer. This sparked a welcome revival of The Two Ronnies on BBC One, 34 years after the show was first broadcast.

"He died yesterday after a long period of heart trouble," his agent confirmed to the BBC today. "He died peacefully and his wife was with him. He had been nursed at home for a long time."

Ronnie leaves behind him wife Joy, and three children, actress Charlotte Barker, actor Adam Barker and Larry Barker.
