Minnie Driver has revealed that her character Frances Kelly in new BBC thriller The Deep reminds her of Ripley from the Alien film franchise.

The actress explained to The Scotsman that she was drawn to the project by the strong characters in the original script.

"[Frances] reminded me so much of Ripley in Alien, and the whole thing was like The Abyss and State Of Play, action films and political thrillers," said Driver. "It ticked all the boxes for me and it would really have to, because it would take a lot to get me to bring my little boy to insanely freezing Glasgow in the winter!"

James Nesbitt and former E.R. star Goran Visnijc also appear in the drama, in which a submarine crew search for a renewable source of energy in the depths of the Arctic Ocean. Driver revealed that her character is forced to make some difficult decisions once the mission begins to fall apart.

"She's slowly compromised by what is going on and it's interesting getting into the psychology of a person who has to make these life and death decisions," she said. "How do you make that real and human when you have no experience of it?"

She also joked that a potential second series would have to be filmed in a warmer location if she were to rejoin the cast.

"They'd have to shoot it in Hawaii for me to do it again!" she laughed.

The Deep begins on BBC One on August 3.
