Jamie Oliver has been criticised for charging a council for chefs in his School Dinners series.

The authority in Greenwich, who made nothing from the series, has paid out £40,000 for the extra staff hired by Oliver.

Councillors have expressed their disappointment with the situation. Liberal Democrat education spokesman in the area Ian Gerrard said: "It's a shame that Jamie Oliver has not been minded to refund some of the money he made to the council. I would urge him to."

The series helped promote Oliver and his products, thought have made his company Sweet as Candy more than £7 million.

A spokesman for the celebrity chef defended him. "Greenwich Council asked us to hire the chefs and agreed to be invoiced for them," he explained. "Jamie put £200,000 of his own money into the show and invoiced for £40,000 as was agreed."
