The BBC has announced plans to adapt Douglas Adams novel Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency for television.

Den of Geek reports that an hour-long dramatisation of the book will air on BBC Four as a one-off pilot.

The book follows private detective Gently as he solves crimes through a combination of luck and guess work. Author Douglas Adams is best known for his Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy series of novels.

No casting has yet been confirmed for the pilot and an air date is still to be determined.

A full series is expected to follow if the pilot is a success with audiences.

Harry Enfield previously played Gently in a 2007 adaptation on BBC Radio Four.
