Tonight signs up Duchess of York

The Duchess of York has been signed up by ITV as a current affairs correspondent for flagship programme Tonight... With Trevor McDonald.

Ferguson will make her debut on the show tomorrow evening, where she will front an investigation into obesity.

An ITV source told the Media Guardian: "She comes across as warm and interested. And she has now got quite a lot of experience from her work on American television.

"It will be a matter of establishing how much work she can fit into her schedule and what kind of issues we want her to report on."

The Duchess says in her report: "I've had first-hand knowledge of what it's like to be overweight and have the media spotlight on me.

"I think I understand the depression and despair people face when they are trying to lose weight. But what's frightening is that here in Britain we're following hard on the heels of America and fast becoming the fattest country in Europe.

"I've never been clinically obese but I can imagine I might well have been if I had not taken control of my eating when I did.

"Being overweight left me feeling very depressed and the more depressed I became, the more I wanted to eat.

"What I realise now is that in order to lose weight permanently you have to change your whole lifestyle and that's not easy."
