BBC News reports that Holmes was caught in traffic as he made his way from presenting on Sky News to the ITV studios. He is currently presenting This Morning with his wife Ruth Langsford.
Madeley and wife Judy Finnigan, who hosted the ITV show from 1988 to 2001, were appearing as guests to promote their new Book Club. He stepped in to present the opening five minutes alongside Langsford.
The 54-year-old told viewers that they were "watching This Morning in the year of our Lord, 2001".
He added that it was "totally mad - getting out of the lift here seeing all the old familiar faces".
"Judy and I were saying it's like stepping out of the Tardis," he said.
When Holmes arrived, Madeley joked: "Just go away - my show."
Writing on Twitter, Finnigan added: "Well that was weird! Richard opening This Morning with Ruth; me on sofa with Eammon when he eventually arrived."
