ITV unveils 'Night and Day'
The programme, originally titled Trafalgar Square, will go into production next month for broadcast in the Autumn.
Peter Creegen, executive producer, said: "We're making a soap that's modern, romantic and aspirational - a programme from a different perspective and in some ways a more realistic perspective.
"It's modern, sexy and fun with a very dark undercurrent."
Actors signed up for the series include Gareth Hunt (The Avengers), Lesley Joseph (Birds of a Feather) and Joe McGann (The Upper Hand).
A spokeswoman for the programme said: "Like the title suggests it is going to be dark and light - there will be a strong thriller element, but that will be balanced with romance and humour.
"It will appeal to a real cross-section of people, not just the teenagers but all ages. It's going to be aspirational, but still edgy with a dark undercurrent. Night And Day will be much more Twin Peaks and Ally McBeal than Coronation Street and EastEnders.
"And it's not just another soap - it will be very different. There will be fantasy sequences and the producer has talked about it breaking all the rules. It will be upbeat and very cool."
