Little Britain is celebrating after winning a number of gongs at the annual British Comedy Awards.

The show beat Ricky Gervais' Extras to win 'best TV comedy'. Writers Matt Lucas and David Walliams also took the inaugural 'Ronnie Barker writer of the year' award.

However, it was not all bad news for Extras, as Gervais' co-star Ashley Jensen won 'best comedy actress' and 'best newcomer' for her role as Maggie on the show.

She explained: "I'm a wee bit speechless and anyone who knows me knows that's an accomplishment. I'm completely blown away by the whole thing. It's a dream. I'm happy I won but the prize was getting my job so anything else is a big bonus."

Victoria Wood and Julie Walters were also honoured at the ceremony with an award for 'outstanding achievement'. Walters said: "It's very special, we go back a very long way."
