BBC apologises for Carr's Gypsy joke

Published Thursday, Jan 5 2006, 19:53 GMT | By Fiona Edwards
The BBC has released a statement apologising for an inappropriate joke about Gypsy women by comedian Jimmy Carr.

Carr, 33, on a Christmas edition of the radio show Loose Ends commented that male gypsy moths can smell the female of the species up to seven miles away and suggested that the same was true for Gypsy women.

The joke should "never have been transmitted" a BBC spokesman said, and added that the BBC apologised "unreservedly" for the remark.

Ann Bagshot, a spokeswoman for the Gypsy council was apparently angry, but "unsurprised" at the remarks: "There are certain groups of people that everyone thinks they can make jokes about and you have to shrug your shoulders and move on."
