A post on the Radio Times Twitter feed claims that the Sherlock star will join regular contributors Ian Hislop and Paul Merton.
Cumberbatch's stint as host, due to air on October 14, will mark the beginning of the 40th series of the topical panel show.
The actor was recently nominated for a National Television Award for his performance in Sherlock and will play MI6 agent Peter Guillam in an upcoming remake of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.
The new series of Have I Got News For You will run for ten episodes and is expected to conclude on December 16.
